The NYSTCE Literacy exam tests whether a person has the knowledge and skill to understand the intricacies of acquisition and development of literacy, including reading and writing, as well as speaking and listening. The literacy professional will enhance student interest in all areas of literacy and continually assess progress. He/she will also be able to work effectively with English language learners and students who have difficulty in reading. Passing the exam demonstrates that a person has the knowledge and skills necessary to comply with the New York State Academic Standards and is qualified to teach in the New York State public school system.
The NYSTCE Literacy exam is comprised of approximately ninety multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response question. The multiple-choice questions cover the following areas: Reading Instruction and Assessment-45 percent of the exam; Foundations of Literacy-23 percent of the exam; and the Role of the Literacy Professional-22 percent of the exam. The constructed-response question is worth 10 percent and is on Reading Instruction and Assessment.
