The NYSTCE Physical Education exam tests whether future physical education teachers have the knowledge and skills necessary to teach physical education in the New York State public school system in accordance with the New York State Academic Standards. Success on this test means that a person has an understanding of the development of physical fitness and health as well as human movement. The teacher must be familiar with all of the techniques and strategies for good health, physical fitness, sports, dance, and more. Teachers must also understand the growth and development of human beings and the relationship of good physical health and habits to good learning.
The NYSTCE Physical Education exam consists of approximately ninety multiple-choice questions in the areas of Physical Education Programs-24 percent of the exam; Physical Fitness and Health-29 percent; Personal Growth and Development-12 percent; and Lifelong Movement Activities and Sports-25 percent. The constructed-response question will be in the area of Physical Fitness and Health and amounts to 10 percent of the exam.
