NYSTCE Teaching Assistant Test

To become a Teaching Assistant in the public school system of the state of New York, a person must take and pass the NYSTCE Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills exam. This test assesses the knowledge and skills of a person in the basic areas of the curriculum of the public school system of the state of New York in accord with academic standards of the state of New York, as well as the person's ability to interact with students, understand their learning capabilities, and support teachers and staff in their goal of providing a supportive learning environment for every student.

The test is comprised of approximately one hundred multiple-choice questions that test the person's knowledge and skills in the following areas: Reading, which comprises 27 percent of the exam; Mathematics, which comprises another 27 percent of the exam; Writing, which comprises 27 percent of the exam; and Instructional Support, which accounts for the final 19 percent of the exam.
