An educator in the theater arts in the state of New York must take and pass the NYSTCE Theater exam. Passing this exam demonstrates the person's ability to understand the fundamentals of theatrical productions. It also shows that this person understands the technical aspects of theater and a variety of theatrical styles. This person can effectively create dramatic texts and design and direct in the area of theatrics.
The NYSTCE Theater exam tests a person in a variety of areas. There are approximately ninety multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response question. The following areas are covered: Responding to and Analyzing Theater-17 percent of the test; Theater Tools, Media, and Techniques-23 percent of the test; Creating, Performing, and Producing Theater-33 percent of the test; and Theater and Culture-17 percent of the test. The one constructed-response question is worth 10 percent of the test and is in the area of Theater Tools, Media, and Techniques.
